How to prepare for an Ultrasound:

  • For all ultrasound exams, wear loose-fitted clothing
  • Fast for 4-8 hours prior to an abdominal or aortic exam
  • Avoid wearing lotion or deodorant prior to a breast exam
  • Drink 4 cups of water and refrain from using the bathroom prior to a renal, pelvic or early pregnancy exam

Estimated Exam Time: 30 minutes

  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant
  • Wear loose clothing, though you may be required to switch into a hospital gown
  • Depending on the type of x-ray, you may need to refrain from eating or drinking for several hours prior

Estimated Exam Time: 10 minutes

How to prepare for an MRI:

  • Eat and drink normally
  • Wear comfortable clothing without any metal
  • Remove all metallic items, including jewelry and glasses
  • If older than 50 and using contrast materials, have your bloodwork done 30 days prior to your MRI

Estimated Exam Time: 20 minutes or 40 minutes with contrast

How to prepare for a CT scan:

  • Refrain from eating for 4 hours prior to a CT scan with contrast
  • If scanning the gastrointestinal tract or bowels, drink a bottle of Barium the night before and two-thirds of a second bottle right before your CT scan  ~or~  drink one full bottle of Barium with iced tea two hours before your CT scan
  • No preparation is necessary for CT scans without contrast

Estimated Exam Time: 15 minutes

  • Remove all jewelry and metal objects
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing without zippers or buttons
  • Do not take vitamins or calcium pills 24 hours before your DEXA scan

How to prepare for a Mammogram:

  • Bring along previous mammogram records
  • Wear comfortable, easy-to-remove clothing
  • Let your doctor know if you have breast implants
  • Avoid lotion and deodorant, as they may interfere with the mammogram
